Quiet Violence by Sophie Rose http://festival15.summerhall.co.uk/event/quiet-violence-by-sophie-rose/ Mon, 27 Jul 2015 03:07:40 +0000 http://festival15.summerhall.co.uk/?post_type=event&p=3115 A show about blue plastic bags and wearing shoes that don’t fit. Squeezed between tight jeans, jenga block flats and clip-on earrings, a young woman is making bad decisions and an old man is eating too much cheese. They’re sharing biscuits on an inflatable sofa; something has to pop. Fast, physical and full of anarchic poetry, shards of life collide in this powerful story of punishment and rescue. Free hobnobs. An exciting new voice in spoken word theatre, co-produced by Roundhouse.

‘Bold, brave and very special’ Polarbear, spoken word artist

‘Evocative, unflinching and very funny’ James Grieve, Paines Plough

Martha Gellhorn http://festival15.summerhall.co.uk/event/martha-gellhorn/ Tue, 21 Jul 2015 04:07:08 +0000 http://festival15.summerhall.co.uk/?post_type=event&p=3103
The work and life of Martha Gellhorn, the great war correspondent who covered practically every trouble-spot on earth for six decades, including the Spanish Civil War, D-Day, Dachau, Viet Nam, Greenham, El Salvador and Mandela’s inauguration. Gellhorn’s main message was, ‘War
happens to PEOPLE.’

She married Hemingway, learned from him and then, journalistically, outstripped him. Presidents, geniuses and generals sought her friendship, but she never lost the common touch. Scores of today’s foremost  journalists were cheered on, championed and
inspired by her.  Jack Klaff recalls his own encounters with Gellhorn in a piece interweaving her wildest and wittiest stories with her unmatchable war reports.

Portraits in Motion http://festival15.summerhall.co.uk/event/portraits-in-motion/ Wed, 27 May 2015 03:05:27 +0000 http://festival15.summerhall.co.uk/?post_type=event&p=2414 While walking over 3500km through Germany, Gerling took photographs of people he met during his wanderings, creating portraits in the form of photographic flipbooks. On stage, Gerling recounts the stories of those who let themselves be photographed.

Gerling describes great, small, serious and quirky accidental encounters and, for a moment, brings his protagonists to life on the screen. These magical studies inspire gentle, profound reflection upon the transitory nature of the moment and the significance of interpersonal encounters.

“Volker Gerling’s flipbook movies are artistic miniatures full of life and emotion – a poetic sensation.” Augsburger Zeitung
