Mementronome is a participatory one-to-one performance by Aletia Upstairs, inspired by the Richard Demarco
archive and supported by Leeds Beckett University’s research programme.

Entering the archive, audience members explore a space filled with unmarked boxes. They find various mementos,
each one triggering a response from the performer.

Reacting to Joseph Beuys’ statement ‘everyone is an artist’, Mementronome takes inspiration from Paul Neagu’s Fish Net’s performance and was created using the methods of Tadeusz Kantor.

“A mesmerising visual and aural feast” Scotsman. The live chemistry between renowned virtuoso percussionist Dame Evelyn Glennie and acclaimed Russian visual artist Maria Rud, delivers a sound and image fusion that is truly unforgettable.

Maria’s evolving paintings are beamed live, by projection artist Ross Ashton, onto the walls of the quadrangle of George Heriot’s School – a 17th-century architectural gem revealed for the first time to Festival audiences.

Joining Evelyn and Maria for selected shows are: Rebecca Tavener, David Heath and DJ Dolphin Boy on 28 & 29 August.

Ringside. A girl on a trapeze. The ghost of every glamorous girl you have ever seen on a trapeze high up in the big top, performing to the roar of the crowd. But she’s up-close in this intimate one on one aerial performance made for your eyes only. You can hear her breathing, watch every muscle twitch, see the bruises as her body performs revolt not acceptance. Lots of sweat, no sequins.

Featuring the lyrics and verses of Jim Morrison, Billie Holiday, Sophie Scholl, Martin Luther King, William Blake, Arundhati Roy, Victor Jara, Gil Scott-Heron, Lupe Fiasco and many others, this is a celebration of those who have spoken out against tyranny while making our hearts pound.

Performed by Roy Hutchins, Sameena Zehra, Selina Nwulu, Jonny Fluffypunk and special guests – with live music from Dr Blue.
